How do you learn about different religions ?

PLease no one make fun of me I am honestly interested in this. I am not one that can just read about a religion I need to experience things and speak to people who actually know what they are talking about. I was born and raised catholic but haven't went to church for like 12 years. I have went through phases where I didn't believe in God, where I do believe, where I have so many questions but I am scared to ask people at churches because I am scared they will be judgemental towards me. I am just such a person who questions everything. How do you find a religion or church that is the right fit for you. Something has been really driving me to seek this out and I don't know why. I mean, do you just walk into a church where you don't know anyone and just like sit there. Most of my friends don't go to church. My husbands family is Lutheran and I have been to their church a few times but it is really small and mostly very elderly people and I didn't feel quite comfortable there for some reason. How does one start out on this journey? How do you know what religion your should be, Do you have to call a church to tell them your new and you are coming and want to learn about their beliefs. etc.. Please don't laugh at me I am not trying to be funny, I have had a strong feeling to do this I just don't know how to learn more or how/where to find my place.
